SCREAMING TO BE HEARD: HORMONE CONNECTIONS WOMEN SUSPECT...AND DOCTORS STILL IGNORE, Elizabeth Vliet, M.D., M. Evans and Company, Inc., New York, NY, 2001, 2nd edition. This is an extremely thorough educational account of womens' hormones: what they do, and what happens when they go missing. Dr. Vliet is a very well-respected physician, author, and women's health advocate. All women who are considering using any form of HRT are urged to read this book while doing their research.

IT'S MY OVARIES, STUPID, Elizabeth Vliet, M.D., Scribner, New York, NY, 2003. Another excellent book by Dr. Vliet which delves into more detail specific endocrine disruptors including environmental toxins, foods, and lifestyle factors, which affect ovarian function, causing hormonal dysfunction such as infertility, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, etc.

THE SAVVY WOMAN'S GUIDE TO TESTOSTERONE, Elizabeth Vliet, M.D., HER Place Press, Tucson, AZ, 2005. An in-depth look at testosterone therapy in women, As always in her books, Dr. Vliet quotes world-wide research from peer-reviewed journals to bring this up-to-date account.

THE SAVVY WOMAN'S GUIDE TO PCOS, Elizabeth Vliet, M.D., HER Place Press, Tucson, AZ, 2006. With the increase in national trend of polycystic ovarian syndrome, esp. among teenagers and young women, this book gives a great review of PCOS and suggestions on how women go about working with their physicians on combating this illness.

HORMONE SOLUTION: STAY YOUNGER LONGER, Thierry Hertoghe, M.D., with Jules-Jacques Nabet, M.D., Three Rivers Press, New York, NY, 2002. Anti-aging expert Dr. Hertoghe goes through 15 of the commonly seen hormone deficiencies, how to test for them, and suggestions on how to replace these hormones.

LIGHTS OUT, T.S. Wiley and Bent Formby, Ph.D., Pocket Books, New York, NY, 2000. This is a fascinating look at how the invention of electricity has dramatically altered our biological rhythms that control our appetite, fertility, and overall health.

SEX, LIES, AND MENOPAUSE, T.S. Wiley, with Julie Taguchi, M.D., William Morrow, New York, NY, 2003. This is another fascinating book by anthropologist T. S. Wiley, which looks at HRT from an evolutionary biology perspective. This book is required reading for any woman who wishes to be placed on the Wiley protocol, which is the method of HRT espoused in this book.

ANTI-AGING MEDICINES, Marios Kyriazis, M.D., Watkins Publishing, London, 2005. A succinct discussion about the science of anti-aging by a respected gerontologist which also reviews some key basic anti-aging recommendations.

THE TESTOSTERONE SYNDROME, Eugene Shippen, M.D. and William Fryer, M. Evans and Co., New York, NY, 1998. Dr. Shippen addresses illnesses related to testosterone deficiency in this book, with more focus on andropause.

WHY MEN NEVER REMEMBER AND WOMEN NEVER FORGET, Marianne J. Legato, M.D., with Laura Tucker, RODALE, 2005. You'll really come to appreciate why men and women think and behave differently after reading this well-researched book, written by the founder of the Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine at Columbia University.

THE ORIGIN DIET, Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D., Henry Holt and Co., New York, NY, 2001. A thorough review of the scientific literature looking at how emulating the paleolithic way of living just might help you to avoid diseases common today. This book also gives recipe suggestions and concrete recommendations addressing lifestyle changes.

THE HIDDEN CONNECTIONS: A SCIENCE FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING, Fritjob Capra, Anchor Books, New York, NY, 2002. A thoughtful book challenging our social institutions to look at the bigger picture in designing ecologically sustainable communities and technologies.

THE FIFTH DISCIPLINE: THE ART AND PRACTICE OF THE LEARNING ORGANZIATION, Peter M. Senge, Double Currency, New York, NY, 1990. A great introduction to organizational theory, looking at systems thinking in order to create a learning organization. Senge also illustrates how his ideas apply in theory and practice, which lead to "looking at the big picture".

The Harvard Women's Health Watch Newsletter, Harvard Health Publications, 10 Shattuck St, Suite 612, Boston, MA 02115. Well-researched articles from peer-reviewed journals on many topics of interest to women of all age groups.

International Menopause Society, www.imsociety.org, which also publishes the journal Climacteric. The IMS has up-to-date press releases, expert panel discussions and reviews in response to world-wide studies which pertain to the study of women in the climacteric and menopausal years. They do not accept advertising for products which have not been proven effective in well-designed clinical trials.

THE SINATRA SOLUTION: METABOLIC CARDIOLOGY, Stephen Sinatra, M.D., Basic Health Publications, 2005. Dr. Sinatra is not only a well-published, experienced cardiologist of 30 years, but also a certified anti-aging specialist, certified bioenergetic psychotherapist, and a certified nutritionist. His book takes us well beyond the traditional view of the cardiovascular system as simply about plumbing, but instead, goes into details of metabolic cardiology, at the heart of which involves how each cardiac cell functions and requires energy (ATP) for ongoing function. He also gives great suggestions on more natural ways of controlling common cardiac problems such as high blood pressure and congestive heart failure without necessarily resorting to powerful pharmaceuticals that are often accompanied by side effects.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DRUG COMPANIES: HOW THEY DECEIVE US AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT, Marcia Angell, M.D., Random house, 2005. This is an extremely well-researched expose about a hot topic written by the former editor-in-chief of the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. I highly recommend this book for patients and physicians so that they gain understanding of just how powerful the pharmaceutical companies are, and how they control everything from medical education to politics, to the FDA. It is simply what the title implies.

OVERDO$ED AMERICA: THE BROKEN PROMISE OF AMERICAN MEDICINE, John Abramson, M.D., Harper Collins, New York, 2004. This is another great book about the corporate take-over of medical education and medical practice by the pharmaceutical companies, and how it is seriously compromising the health of the American public. Every consumer of medical care should read this book, along with Dr. Angell's book listed above.
